Natural indigo behaves differently to synthetic dye. Getting a few habits right in the first few washes makes a real difference to how long the colour holds.
Before the first wash
Hand-dyed indigo will release a little excess colour in its first two or three washes — this is normal, not a fault. Wash it separately during this period.
Washing
Always wash in cold water, by hand where possible, with a mild detergent. Avoid soaking for long periods, and never use bleach or harsh whiteners.
Drying and storing
Dry flat or on a padded hanger, away from direct sun, which fades natural dyes faster than synthetic ones. Store folded rather than on a thin wire hanger to avoid shoulder stress marks over time.
